John 6:32-35 Bread of Life

Then Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

If you give a person a fish, they are hungry again in an hour. If you teach them to catch a fish, you feed them for a lifetime. When we feed the hungry, we are not simply providing a meal or shelter. Feeding the hungry is about Christian outreach. Christian outreach is not about giving a person a fish, and it is not about simply teaching them to fish. Christian outreach is about learning to fish together. We have people who are hungry in our community. The first task is to feed them. In doing so, we share more than a meal. We are sharing life. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. Jesus says, “This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever.” In Christ, we receive much more than a meal. In Christ, we receive hope, peace, compassion, grace, mercy, forgiveness, love, comfort, strength, life, and salvation.
